Getting around issues helping folk with online shopping

We’re setting up an online shopper service for older residents in sheltered housing. Some need a lot of help including with password entry and at checkout stage. We want to minimise any risk of financial abuse to tenants or of putting staff/Volunteers in a vulnerable position. Any suggestions -other than 'look away now' which isn't an option!See More

Productive 6 month review meeting of Tap into it @ Gillespie Crescent (sheltered housing club)

Met with all 4 wonderful volunteers to review the last 3 months of the 'computer' (.../tablet/smart phone/ereader/..) club at Gillespie Crescent sheltered housing, Edinburgh. B & B both not feeling too good but stuck at it. M (-new volunteer) introduced himself. He's in a senior position with HP on the mobile phone testing side of things but has a knack of explaining tech stuff in plain English. L's first meeting with us too, so told us a bit about her work with John Lewis systems…See More

Where are things at with Digital Participation in Scotland?

Lately I've been on a quest for updates on Digital Participation strategy & implementation here in Scotland. Thought I'd share what I'd found out so far. If anyone has more info, please let me know!  I was pleased to hear from Alan Martin, Digital Partipation Manager, Scottish Govt, that a website is coming. He explained that he had delayed until things were a bit clearer and there was more definite news to communicate.    In the meantime, also thanks to Alan, I went along to a…See More

Handy tools for a computer club

I was pleased to see each of the 9 Tenants who turned up for the weekly computer club in their block of flats. Some had already collared a Volunteer, keen to discover what else they can do on the web or help unravel tech knots. Was I foolish perhaps to dare disturb such promising proceedings to try something new? Before I knew it, I found myself telling folk that I wanted us to spend 15 minutes or so as a group each week, looking at what the web and tech has to offer, before getting on with our…See More

How Tenants at one sheltered housing complex in Edinburgh are getting on(line).

It was great to be at the meeting of the Social Housing Strategy Group last thursday. I agreed with Jane (Beaton) that we don't need to wait till all the infrastructure is in place and the conditions are perfect. I've been encouraged by the progress of a group of Edinburgh sheltered housing Tenants in getting online and more confident. A considerable proportion are over 75, with disabilities and/or health problems, so amongst the hardest to reach usually. I reckon a lot of it is down to…See More
